First and foremost you ought to understand the objective of studying literature.
The main reason why we study literature in the Kenyan curriculum is to promote values/morals. Therefore all KCSE essay questions revolve around certain values.
Virtues (good deeds) are rewarded, whereas vices (bad deeds) are punished. For instance, due to Kino's greed, he loses his property as well as his son Coyotito. This agony is as a result of desire without limit.
You can identify the moral values in a text by studying some themes in the pearl or by looking at the actions of the characters. For example we can conclude that the doctor is not only greedy but also callous when he poisons Coyotito with the view of getting the Pearl.

DeleteAnd is there a specific way to write a topic essay because I mostly use the format of .The author John Steinbeck in his novel "The pearl"is able to show ,.....and most of the times I tend to get a reason what may be may main issue.
ReplyDeleteIn order to write a topic sentence, consider the demands of the question. Try to answer the question in the first sentence before illustrating. A topic sentence should carter for both sides of the question e.g. Discuss the evil nature of greed. You should introduce your paragraph as such "The Doctor acts in a selfish way/greedily as a result of his evil nature" ... Then illustrate by adding his actions, background to the action and the outcome of his evil deeds ... greed. Thank you.
DeleteQuestions on choice and failure to follow instructions often are centered on KINO as key character of discussion. But questions on greed, deception uses a diversified approach.
